Swamp Draining Continues: 3,600 HHS Workers Shown the Door [WATCH]

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has laid off 3,600 probationary Health and Human Services (HHS) employees, a move expected to save taxpayers approximately $600 million annually, according to reports.

The layoffs, which took place on Friday, were part of a broader effort to eliminate government waste.

While thousands of workers were cut, more than half of HHS’s probationary employees remain in their positions.

According to Fox News, DOGE identified critical employees by evaluating essential agency functions, such as frontline healthcare providers, emergency responders, and scientists engaged in research.

Additional screenings considered job history, background, and job titles.

“In many cases where there was a lack of clarity, we worked directly with folks who either knew the employees or knew the work of the division to clarify the exact work they were doing,” a Trump administration official said.

The reduction comes as over 65,000 federal workers have accepted President Donald Trump’s recent buyout offer, according to Breitbart News.

The initiative aligns with the administration’s push to streamline government operations.

DOGE, led by Elon Musk, has taken aggressive steps to downsize government spending.

The agency has worked to eliminate federal contracts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), consulting contracts, and federal subscriptions to mainstream media outlets, according to reports.

However, the audits and budget cuts have sparked backlash from Democrats, who are reportedly prepared to push for a government shutdown in the upcoming spending battle.

“The Democrats’ tactic puts them into a precarious position of supporting waste, fraud, and abuse, three items DOGE is tasked with cutting,” Breitbart News reported.

One of the most contentious aspects of DOGE’s efforts is its recent access to the Treasury Department’s federal payment system, which allows the agency to track how taxpayer funds are spent.

Critics have also voiced opposition to Trump’s decision to defund agencies such as USAID and lay off staffers.

David Walker, former head of the Government Accountability Office from 1998 to 2008, weighed in on the issue during an interview Wednesday.

He stated that DOGE is taking necessary action but emphasized the need for transparency to maintain credibility and public trust.

As the debate over government spending continues, DOGE’s cost-cutting measures remain a focal point in Washington, with both sides bracing for the next budget showdown.
