Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has opened up about the turmoil within the Democratic Party during the final weeks of Joe Biden’s presidency.
Speaking at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, Jean-Pierre described the period as chaotic and expressed disappointment over how quickly Democrats distanced themselves from Biden following his debate performance against President Donald Trump.

During the forum, Jean-Pierre voiced her frustration over how Democratic leadership handled the situation, saying she had never seen anything like it before.

“Personally what I think was the toughest thing in the three weeks, there was a disconnect for me what was happening in the leadership of the Democratic Party,” Jean-Pierre said.
She further described the response to Biden’s debate performance as a coordinated attack from within his own party.
“It was a firing squad, and I had never seen anything like it before,” she said.
“I’d never seen a party do that in the way that they did, and it was hurtful and sad to see that happening—a firing squad around a person who I believe was a true patriot.”

Jean-Pierre defended Biden’s presidency, stating that she was taken aback by how quickly members of his own party abandoned him.
“That was shocking, shocking!” she said. “Instead of coming together to really be unified and trying to figure out how do we save our democracy, how do we fight back, that was what it was seeing.”
She called the internal party turmoil “truly unfortunate” and argued that the infighting damaged the Democrats more than they realized.
Jean-Pierre also reflected on the difficulties she faced during her time as White House Press Secretary. She admitted that she often struggled in the role, questioning how she would get through the day.
“I’m human at the end of the day,” she said.
She revealed that she typically spent four hours preparing for press briefings and leaned heavily on former senior advisor Mike Donilon for guidance.
“Almost every word, everything I say has been approved,” Jean-Pierre said.
She did not elaborate on why the administration insisted on such strict messaging controls, but her comments shed light on the level of coordination within Biden’s White House communications team.
When asked about her future plans, Jean-Pierre did not provide a clear answer. While many expected her to transition back into media, possibly MSNBC, she did not confirm any next steps.
Jean-Pierre’s remarks highlight the internal fractures within the Democratic Party that emerged in Biden’s final weeks.
The former press secretary’s defense of Biden and frustration with Democratic leadership reflect the broader struggles the party faced as it sought to navigate an election cycle dominated by questions over Biden’s viability as a candidate.
