Chuck Schumer Caught Rubbing Elbows with CCP Official in New York City

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been photographed multiple times this month alongside a top Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official who has publicly dismissed allegations of genocide against the Uyghur population.

Chen Li, the Chinese Consul General in New York, shared several images of himself with Schumer on his X profile, documenting their appearances at Chinese cultural events in New York City.

“Thrilled to join thousands at the [Brooklyn] Lantern Festival Parade!” Chen wrote in one post, accompanied by a photo with Schumer at the annual event.

“Incredible #Chinese cultural performances—so proud of Chinese Community in New York! It’s time for celebration and friendship!”

On Monday, Chen shared another image featuring Schumer and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg at the 27th NYC Lunar New Year Parade.

In his post, Chen said he was “glad to join the 27th NYC Lunar New Year Parade together with” his American “friends” and Chinese “fellow-countrymen.”

Chen has previously denied that the Chinese government is responsible for human rights abuses against the Uyghur population, despite widespread international condemnation.

The United Nations and other human rights organizations have accused the CCP of operating forced labor camps and engaging in severe repression against Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang region.

In a 2021 statement, Chen dismissed these accusations, saying, “It’s hard to imagine how could ‘genocide’ and ‘forced labor’ [be] associated with such a place where population grows steadily, society is safe and open, and people enjoy happy life. Where do the accusations come from?”

Chen further claimed, “‘Genocide’ was claimed by former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the very last day of his term.

It was based on reports fabricated by some extremist anti-China individuals who haven’t been to Xinjiang for years and accounts of a few so-called witnesses who were proved to be trained ‘actors’ and ‘actresses.’”

The Chinese government has repeatedly insisted that its “re-education camps” are voluntary programs aimed at reducing extremism.

However, leaked documents and images have contradicted these claims, showing that the camps are operated under strict surveillance and control, according to previous reports by Fox News Digital.

Some experts have raised concerns about American politicians publicly engaging with CCP representatives.

Michael Sobolik, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, warned that such interactions could send conflicting messages about U.S. policy toward China.

“The Chinese Communist Party is actively seeking to weaken America from within. Elected officials shouldn’t share the stage with them; they should be working to defeat Beijing,” Sobolik told Fox News Digital.

He added, “It sends mixed signals when politicians talk about countering the CCP one day then break bread with them the next.”

Schumer has previously been criticized for associating with Chen’s predecessor, Huang Ping, who also denied allegations of Uyghur genocide and actively promoted CCP propaganda.

Huang, who served as China’s New York Consul General from 2018 to 2024, was named multiple times in a criminal indictment against Linda Sun, the now-former deputy chief of staff to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The indictment, which referenced Huang as “PRC Official-1”, detailed his interactions with U.S. officials, including meetings with Hochul, who was identified as “Politician-2.”

Huang repeatedly referred to the CCP as a “great party” and engaged with business leaders, lawmakers, and media organizations throughout his tenure.

Last year, Sobolik warned about the growing influence of CCP operatives in the U.S., saying, “The Chinese Communist Party’s malign influence in the United States is pervasive and perverse.”

He added, “The CCP, through ‘united front’ actors, uses American voices to advance its own hostile agenda. Governments at every level, from local and state to federal, must root out Beijing’s ongoing efforts to exploit our openness and freedom.”

Schumer has not publicly addressed his recent appearances with Chen or responded to criticism regarding his association with CCP officials.
