Cheltenham favourite Sir Gino out for season with infection

Sir Gino, a long-time favorite at the Cheltenham Festival, has been sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a ligament infection. The five-year-old horse was set to race at Newbury on Saturday but missed the event due to what was initially considered a “small wound” on a hind leg. Unfortunately, that injury has now become infected, and he is currently receiving treatment at an equine hospital. Owned by Joe and Marie Donnelly, Sir Gino has an impressive record of five wins in Britain, including two victories over fences, and was previously priced at 8/11 for the Arkle Chase on the Festival’s first day in March. In a statement on X, Henderson noted, “Regrettably, Sir Gino’s condition has worsened and he is now at the equine hospital. Initial assessments at Donnington Grove revealed that an infection has affected the ligaments in his near hind leg. This will necessitate extensive treatment, which unfortunately means he will not race again this season. This is a significant setback for Joe and Marie Donnelly and everyone at Seven Barrows, but we will do everything we can to ensure this remarkable horse returns to full health next season.” See also: This marks the second consecutive Festival that Sir Gino has missed, having been withdrawn from last year’s Triumph Hurdle due to health concerns affecting Henderson’s Seven Barrows stable. As a result, Willie Mullins’ Majborough is now the 4/7 favorite for the Arkle, followed by L’eau du Sud and Ballyburn.
